Nurse arrested for April incident

An April incident involving former ISU basketball player Michael Nurse was resolved when he was arrested after an exhibition game at Iowa State.

Nurse, 23, was arrested last week on a criminal mischief warrant that stemmed from an April 12 incident involving another ISU student.

“Nurse took some girl’s cell phone and damaged the phone,” said Sgt. Mike Johns of the Ames Police Department. “The owner of the cell phone reported the incident in April. [She said] one of her friends was at a party where Michael Nurse was, and he gave the friend a ride home and on the way home he damaged the cell phone. He threw it out of the car, and they backed over it.”

A warrant was issued for Nurse shortly after the incident, but Nurse, whose permanent address is in New Jersey, graduated and left Ames. He is currently a member of the Next Level exhibition basketball team that travels the nation playing Division I men’s basketball teams. The exhibition team played the Cyclones Wednesday, and Iowa State won 85-72.

Nurse was a starter on last season’s Cyclone team that won the Big 12 conference and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament.

“Officers knew at the police department that there was an outstanding warrant on Michael,” said Officer Jeff Barnes of the Ames Police Department, who arrested Nurse. “We knew he was going to be playing a game at Hilton Coliseum for the Des Moines Dragons. We had officers working at the game that recognized him and approached him after the game and took him into custody.”

Barnes said Nurse willingly went with the officers after the game and was completely cooperative.

“He was real good with us and, we tried to be real good with him,” he said, adding that this was his first dealing with Nurse.

Tom Kroeschell, director of media relations for the ISU Athletics Department, said the department did not have an official comment on Nurse’s arrest because he is no longer an ISU student. Nurse could not be reached for comment.

Nurse was arrested Wednesday evening, Barnes said. He bonded out shortly afterward with $325 cash.
