An Ames woman died Tuesday evening after she was hit by a car near the Lincoln Center Hy-Vee, according to Ames police.

The 66-year-old woman, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was struck by a westbound car on South 4th Street, said Sgt. Mike Johns of the Ames Police Department.

“It appears from the scene that she was trying to cross the street on South 4th just east of the intersection with the Pacific Northwestern tracks,” he said.

The driver’s name was not released Tuesday evening due to on-the-scene investigation.

“[Officers and paramedics] were trying to perform CPR on the scene,” Johns said. “She was taken to [Mary Greeley Medical Center] where she was pronounced dead.”

Johns said he did not know if charges will be filed.
