Letter to the editor: Stillman irrational, irresponsible

Matthew Burack

If Brian Stillman was trying for sarcasm or humor in “Not voting β€” that’s my solution,” he failed. If he was serious, he is irresponsible and irrational.

Voting is the only way many of us make our voices heard and enact change. If the reason you’re not voting is you don’t like any of the candidates then pick a write-in.

If you’re not voting because you don’t like the political process, vote for someone who will change it. Republicans and Democrats reap the benefits of the electoral college, so they’re not likely to do this.

Ralph Nader is one among many who would like to see a binding “None of the Above” option included in all elections. If this option received a majority, another race would have to be held with new candidates. Nader also supports campaign finance reform, instant run-off elections and proportional representation.

For more information on these concepts, visit The Center for Voting and Democracy at www.fairvote.org. You can also read a critique of our current system versus two other methods at www.discover.com/nov_00/gthere.html?article=featbestman.html.

The only message not voting sends is you are too lazy to get off your ass and participate in your own government. It says you don’t care about what your government does or what it stands for, and you won’t complain when things go wrong.

Whether you vote for Nader, Buchanan, Hagelin, Gore, Bush, or your mom, make sure your voice is heard.
