Letters to the editor: Theta Xi should explain

Curt Hawthorn

After following the situation involving Theta Xi this past week, I decided to put in my two cents. The first story was the vandalism of the Christian Peterson “Ring of Life” sculpture. Both students were members of Theta Xi, and the president of the house issued a statement that action would be taken for the “immediate suspension of the two members from the house.” The next story was the two stolen statues found in the living room of Theta Xi. I find it very interesting that the same president who just issued a statement about suspending members for theft was unavailable for comment about the theft of two statues in their living room. Should Jones and Johnson be charged for the vandalism of the statue or should the house be charged? When the den of a dorm floor gets vandalized from a student on the dorm floor, the whole floor gets fined and has to pay for the repair. In my opinion, Jones and Johnson were pushed by the house to do something, like steal a statue, to gain respect from their house. Because those two were caught, the house turned on them and decided it was in the best interest of the house to suspend these two members immediately. If the house is suppose to support its “brothers,” isn’t it in the best interest of the house to admit its responsibility in the theft and pay for the damages? This is my opinion, and I will continue to think like this until someone proves me different. I would like a statement from Theta Xi’s president about why these statues were in the living room. Clear the house’s name or clear the student’s name, but you owe an explanation to the university. Curt Cretin Hawthorn
