Letter to the editor: No valid non-greek points

Kurt Ferguson

I am writing in response to the continued exchange between greeks and non-greeks. I think it’s awfully unfair that many people areÿmisconstruing the actions of a few greeks as representative of the greek system as a whole. If this were the case, the city of Ames would be in ruins. Large numbers of things would be stolen or vandalized every day. So obviously that’s a pretty flawed theory. non-greeks. I am not currently nor have I ever been a member of the greek system. non-greeks. I say this becauseÿI’m sure some people are foolish enough to think anyone thatÿdefends those evil greeks in any wayÿmust be one of them.ÿ non-greeks. I don’t ally myself with either “side” if there is such a thing. non-greeks. I fail to see why it’s necessary for everyone to exhibit the good old sheep reflex and just adopt the opinion that they feel the majority of their peers have. non-greeks. Why it must become greeks versus non-greeks is just difficult for me to comprehend. I see precious little point in a such a petty, little quarrel. non-greeks. Now we have them battling it out in the Daily. non-greeks. I hate to break it to all the non-greeks, but so far the greek arguments have been far more valid and objective than the blatant finger-pointing and labeling coming from those who aren’t greeks. non-greeks. I mean seriously, I have yet to see any valid point from the non-greeks. I’ve seen plenty of evidence of prejudice and preconceived notions, not to mention a great deal of gross generalizations, but nothing that I would consider a valid point. non-greeks. The one complaint that I have so far is about the letter from Chris Sullivan. I thought his letter was very good, save one thing. When he said “You think we think we’re better than you – we don’t. We know it.” That comes off as awfully arrogant and essentially invalidates any impact his letter would have had, as it will merely infuriate a large number of people, as I’mÿquite certain that someÿpeople shall interpret that as meaning the Greeks view themselves as better than everyone who isÿnon-Greek. non-greeks. I really hope that’s not what he meant to imply, as such thinking is merely the sign of an arrogant, self-delusional mind. Thinking one’s self to be better than everyone else is just pathetic. Arrogance ALWAYS implies ignorance. non-greeks. I hope that we can get along for the most part, and I think we will. I have nothing against the greeks, and I hope they have nothing against us “dorm dwellers.” non-greeks. I also have nothing against Chris Sullivan. I went to high school with him, and I actually think he’s pretty damn cool. Kurt Ferguson
