The search for a new athletics director at Iowa State has drawn to a close and an announcement is set for today.

Today at 2 p.m. Iowa State will name its new athletics director in a press conference held in the Jacobson Building’s Hunziker Auditorium.

The Daily Oklahoman reported Tuesday that Bruce Van De Velde, senior associate athletic director at the University of Oklahoma, has been chosen to replace Gene Smith, who left Iowa State to take the job of athletic director at Arizona State University in July, but ISU officials and Van De Velde declined to confirm the report.

“It hasn’t been announced,” said ISU Interim President Richard Seagrave. “I can tell you that there won’t be any surprises at the press conference.”

Van De Velde was among a group of finalists who visited the ISU campus earlier this month. Other finalists are Paul Griffin, director of intercollegiate athletics at the University of South Florida, and David Martin, senior associate athletics director at Oklahoma State University.

Van De Velde is an ISU graduate and former assistant football coach. Van De Velde has been at Oklahoma since July 1999, and he also has worked at Missouri, Utah State, Kansas State, Tulane, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska Wesleyan and Dana College.

Martin, also an ISU alumnus, has been senior associate athletics director and chief operations officer at Oklahoma State since 1999. Martin was associate athletics director from 1983-98 and served as interim Big 12 conference commissioner in 1998.

Griffin has also held positions at Jacksonville University and Roanoke College.
