Building at the speed of light

While the annual Blitz Build project has been under construction for the past few weeks, the home’s progress can be found faster than the speed of light.

Pictures of the 1,000 square feet house are being posted on a Web site three times a day throughout Homecoming week, allowing viewers to see the Blitz Build progress from the comfort of their computer.

This is the first time the Homecoming Committee has posted pictures of the Blitz Build throughout the week. The Blitz Build is a partnership between the Story County Habitat for Humanity and Iowa State to build the exterior of a home in one week. This is the third year in a row that the Blitz Build has been a part of the Homecoming activities.

Blitz Build organizers are pleased to watch the progress happen both at the building site and on the Web site.

“It’s kind of nice to see the progression through the week and all the work that is done each day,” said Cheryl Zimmerman, Homecoming Community Service coordinator.

The Blitz Build started Monday morning and is scheduled to be finished on Saturday. Story County volunteers will continue to work on the interior of the house on weekends. The family is planned to move in the three bedroom, two bath house, located at 1127 Northwestern Ave., sometime in December.

The Blitz Build has an average of 70 students working on the house each day during the week. The Web site photos allow for student volunteers’s friends and family members to watch the work being done.

“By having daily updated photos allows people who might not have the chance to see the site know how the progress with the Blitz Build goes,” said Adam Laug, Homecoming Community Project coordinator.

“It’s makes people more aware and proud of what they’ve done,” Laug said.
