Letter to the editor: Sales tax and fat cats

Dave Frasier

ISU students should be exempt from the local option sales tax. Local schools have been traditionally funded from local property taxes.

This sales tax option is proposed to fund Ames school expansion. ISU students should not be required to pay for Ames schools. In effect, the parents from across the state will be paying for Ames schools.

The Ames community gouges ISU students at every opportunity with high costs, rents, gas prices and low wages. This option sales tax is one more example of the greed of this community.

Ames takes advantage of captive ISU students and their parents’ pocket books. The local community in conjunction with the university go out of their way to grab as much money as possible. The Iowa legislature may have to pass a law to prevent Iowa college towns from implementing local sales tax options.

With treatment like this is it any wonder that Iowa college graduates leave the state as fast as they can?

Wake up, Iowa, and protect your college students from the greed of local fat cats who have school administrators in their pockets.
