Friday night fun at Free Friday Flicks

Student leaders in the residence halls have developed a positive weekend alternative for those living in the dorms. Free Friday Flicks is a program chartered through the Inter-Residence Hall Association aiming to give students a social but safe option for Friday nights. “It’s a very enjoyable activity for students starting out their weekend,” said Victor Van Laar, junior in biochemistry and president of Free Friday Flicks. The program shows a different movie every Friday night in Carver 001 and Carver 101. There are three different showings. Although the movies are shown in a lecture hall, they’re definitely fun social events, said IRHA President Paul Duncan, junior in transportation and logistics. “There’s a lot of camaraderie, and it is a very relaxed atmosphere,” he said. Duncan said Free Friday Flicks shows films that are popular and fairly new. Most of the films have just left the theater and have not yet reached video stores, he said. “The rooms have enough room, the chairs are comfortable and they even show a cartoon before every show,” he said. Duncan vows to make it to every movie showing this year. “You can’t pass up a free movie,” he said. “It’s a great value for all students.” Sommer Hackenmiller, junior in chemical engineering, said in the past she has enjoyed the movies. “They had pretty current movies,” she said, “and it was something fun to do even before you went out.” Jon Barnhill, treasurer of Free Friday Flicks, said the movies are getting more popular. “As we do a better job with advertising the numbers will continue to grow,” said Barnhill, sophomore in zoology. Van Laar said he hopes to get more people interested and aware of the program by placing flyers in each of the vice presidents’ mailboxes. The flyers will announce each week’s movie and time. The IRHA Free Friday Flick Web site gives students access to the semester’s movie schedule. Some of the upcoming movies include “Gone in 60 Seconds” (Sept. 22), “Gladiator” (Sept. 29), “Patriot” (Oct. 6), “Perfect Storm” (Oct. 13) and “Hollowman” (Oct. 20). Flyers promoting each week’s movie are also hung around campus, especially in Carver. “We also do shows in-between holiday breaks,” Van Laar said. “For those, we may put up table tents.” It is a great thing for floors, houses or groups of friends to do together, he added. There is no reason for the students not to go, since their dues are paying for it, he said. Van Laar said he has gotten a lot of responses from students and “for the most part, they have been pretty positive.”
