GSB seats new senate advisory position

Steven Brittain

The Government of the Student Body met Wednesday evening in the Memorial Union to establish and fill a new legislative position. The senate voted 23-0 to seat Chris Wisher as the special assistant for internal legislative affairs. This GSB seat was created to be an adviser to the speaker and vice speaker of the senate. Wisher, who was vice speaker of the senate last year, will aid the speaker in parliamentary procedure and legislative processes. The senate also introduced and discussed four new bills at its meeting. The first of these new bills proposes that the finance bylaws be amended. This bill calls for all organizations that receive GSB money to place the phrase “Funded by GSB,” an equivalent phrase, or the approved GSB logo on any advertising, printed or electronic material they distribute. Other bylaw changes are also included in the bill. A funding bill to transfer about $22,000 from the special projects account to the depreciation account for capital equipment was introduced this week. If approved, this money will be spent for the upkeep of equipment for GSB, the Department of Public Safety’s Safety Escort Service, ISU9 and Veishea. A second funding bill was introduced to establish a Fall Gala account for the university-wide, alcohol-free event slated for Oct. 21. GSB President Ben Golding and GSB Finance Director Stephen Medanic will transfer $4,000 from their executive stipends to fund this event. The final bill proposed the allocation of $1,240 from the GSB discretionary account to fund “Meet Your Government Day” on Oct. 4. Each of these bills will be discussed and voted on at next Wednesday’s meeting.
