ISU presidential search criteria finalized

The finalized criteria for the selection of the next ISU president have been determined. The ISU Presidential Search and Screen Advisory Committee voted Friday on the final standard of judgment for presidential candidates to be presented to the state Board of Regents in October. The committee is made up of 27 ISU administrators, faculty, staff and students. The criteria cover a wide range of attributes and personal qualifications desired in candidates for the position. Some of these include an understanding of the mission of a land-grant research university, an ability to identify and analyze problems, and a doctorate degree. Benjamin Allen, chairman of the search committee, said few changes were made from the original draft. “We added indications that the candidate should have an understanding and commitment to shared governance and emphasize the important role ISU plays in the economics of the state of Iowa,” said Allen, dean of the College of Business. David Hopper, president of the ISU Faculty Senate, said shared governance is important. “The concept of shared governance is where faculty and administration work together, especially in curricular matters and faculty participation in the selection of their colleagues,” he said. Hopper, chair of the subcommittee to draft the criteria, said a few other items were also added to the final list. “A candidate should have a commitment to understanding the role of arts and humanities and have positive relationships with public officials,” he said. Hopper said the search committee is confident the Board of Regents will approve the final draft. “We have a fairly sound set of criteria and we hope the board will indeed support them,” Hopper said. “[The Board of Regents] could add items or take out items; it’s their prerogative. Once the board acts, the decision is final.” Allen said candidate interviews will begin after the criteria are finalized. “The advertisement went out last week, and we should be getting more interest in the next few weeks,” Allen said. “We have a very strong pool of prospects.” The finalized criteria submitted to the Board of Regents will be on the Web site later this week, but the original draft can also be found at www.iastate.edu/pres/.
