ISU lacrosse team beats Iowa

Freshman attacker Hans Layman made an early impression on the ISU lacrosse team, as he scored the final goal to clinch the Cyclone’s 7-6 win in overtime over the Hawkeye lacrosse team. As the intrastate tension between the University of Iowa and Iowa State mounted in the hours before the football game Saturday morning, the two lacrosse teams met to kick off the season in an exhibition game. Both teams worked off its preseason rust in anticipation of next weekend’s nine-team invitational tournament in Ames, where the teams could meet again. “The game was intended to be a friendly scrimmage,” said ISU Lacrosse Club Vice President Jerry Dietsch. “The teams just got together to play and brake the rust off the sticks.” The Hawkeyes were the first team on the board, but the teams split possession of the lead throughout regulation. As the final seconds of the fourth quarter clicked down, the scoreboard was even at six goals a piece. Layman sent a shot sailing into the Hawkeye goal in sudden death overtime to tip the scales in the Cyclones’ favor. In addition to Hans’ game-winning goal, attacker Jason Hubanks and midfielder Ben Perry both chipped in one goal apiece. Midfielder Brent Nichols posted two goals, and Dietsch, another midfielder, dished out two assists. Attackers Scott Carlson and Nate Hardy rounded out the Cylcone offense, each contributing a goal and an assist. The exhibition game also gave both teams a chance to see how the new players would work into the rotations before the tournaments begin. “The new guys are working out spectacularly,” Dietsch said. “We’ve got a couple of new guys who are new to Iowa State who have played before, and we have some who have never played but are picking it up better than anyone ever would have hoped.” Although the Cyclones came out with their first victory of the season, the players said there is a lot of room for improvement before the home tournament. “In all honesty, I think both teams played pretty sloppy,” said goalie Mike Schmidt. “Overall, it was a typical first game, I guess.” The Cyclones will kick off their home tournament this Saturday, Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. on the Towers fields, and games will continue throughout the weekend. “I think we looked pretty good, pulling together to beat Iowa for the first time in four years. We definitely need to put our offense together and fine tune our game ,” said ISU Lacrosse Club President Tim Rourke.
