Hughley a hit at Dew the Rec

In a well-received comedy performance filled with raunchy sex jokes and crude language, D.L. Hughley met his goal of saturating the Rec Center with laughter during Friday’s Dew the Rec.

“I didn’t know there was black people in Iowa,” he said early in the show. “Y’all must be a part of the witness protection program.”

The capacity crowd sat tightly packed on the stiff rubbery floor of the running track.

However, despite the discomfort of having no room to stretch, Hughley securely held the audience’s attention.

“Sit them bastards on the floor so they won’t be able to get fucked up ’cause their booties hurt,” said opening act Alan Bond.

He couldn’t have summed up the vibe better as the show took on the atmosphere of an after-prom party.

Throughout the show, Hughley tried his best to relate with the college audience.

“Are you working hard or fuckin’ up your parents’ money?” he asked, pointing out that he never went to college.

“Your coach went crazy like a muthafucka,” Hughley said later, referring to ISU men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy’s behavior during the NCAA tournament.

Looking to the crowd for inspiration, he stepped off the stage and meandered through the people, asking them questions and playfully making fun of them.

Many of Hughley’s jokes revolved around the differences between white people and black people, and the rustic atmosphere of Iowa.

Hughley was intrigued to hear that many in the crowd were from towns like Okoboji, Coon Rapids and Storm Lake, and he constantly referred back to these as central ideas to his jokes.

The comedian also tapped into the subject of politics and national affairs, applauding the progress of Bill Clinton despite his drawbacks.

Hughley expressed the need for Elian Gonzales to return home to his father.

He asked why Veishea had been ordered to be dry.

When someone yelled that it was because of riots and a murder, he compared the celebration to the LA riots of 1992.

“It’s just another excuse for people to get drunk,” he said.
