Police look for driver of stolen Ames vehicle

After a short chase in a stolen vehicle, crashing into a private residence and fleeing on foot, an unidentified white male escaped from Ames Police officers early Sunday morning, police said.

Officers first noticed the vehicle, which had been reported stolen earlier Sunday morning by an Ames resident, on 13th Street, but when they attempted to pull the car over, the driver took off, turning onto Curtiss Avenue. The driver eventually crashed the car into a residence at 1310 Curtiss Ave., said Sgt. Randy Kessel, public information officer for the Ames Police Department.

The suspect then exited the vehicle, Kessel said, took off on foot and was chased by police for two blocks, running through some residents’ yards and leaping over fences before police lost visual contact with him.

Kessel said officers described the suspect as a white adult male wearing a dark coat and light-colored pants. Further identification might be possible, though.

“We’ll be looking at our car cam for a possible identification,” he said. Kessel also said investigators are processing the car for fingerprints.

Minor damage was done to the residence at 1310 Curtiss Ave. and to the vehicle.

Kessel said the Police Department’s three-officer investigation team is confident that witnesses who can help in the investigation will come forward, and he predicted the case could be solved as soon as today.

“We’re looking at any help we can get,” he said. “We usually get a call from someone who knows something.”
