Regents approve ISU dorm bond sale quickly

The Board of Regents accomplished its brief docket during Wednesday’s teleconference call meeting. The agenda, which usually takes two days to cover, began at 10 a.m. and was finished by 11 a.m.

During the meeting, board members discussed a variety of topics, all of which were approved or passed. Some of these items include the passage of specialty fees for the three regent universities, approval of the dormitory bond sale at Iowa State and approval of a bid for the new Ames/ISU ice arena.

Warren Madden, vice president for Business and Finance, and Thomas Hill, vice president for Student Affairs, were pleased with the approval of the dormitory bonds.

“This bond issue completes the funding for Hawthorn Court,” Madden said. “They’re apparently having a very good response.”

Hill agreed that the Department of Residence’s Hawthorn Court project looks promising.

“The response is very encouraging,” he said. “They’re only running about 50 percent of the slots.”

Madden said he was also happy with the board’s approval of the ice arena bid for Iowa State.

“We think these are very good bids in this interest climate,” he said. “The goal is to have it done by the 2001 ice season.”

Madden also said students should not be too concerned about the board’s approval of specialty fees at Iowa State.

“Many of them are driven by the tuition rates set by the regents last fall,” he said.

Madden said the regent universities generally introduce various fees during the spring semester to cover items such as books and programming costs.

In addition to the regular business on the agenda, the board members also discussed the upcoming Legislative decision on funding for the Board of Regents and state universities.

Some board members are concerned that they will not receive adequate funding from the Legislature but are working to receive full funding from the Statehouse.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us,” said Owen Newlin, president of the board.
