BOR plans efficient meeting

A quick agenda is in store for Board of Regents members today, as they will be convening from various locations in the state for a telephonic conference call instead of meeting at one of the three regent universities.

“It’s a pretty slim agenda because it is a telephonic meeting,” Regent David Neil said. “It’ll be pretty noncontroversial.”

Some items up for discussion by board members will be Vilsack’s capital funding recommendations for Iowa’s regent institutions and the final approval of specialized fees and charges for the University of Iowa, Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa.

John McCarroll, director of University Relations, said Vilsack’s funding recommendations should not create a large discussion since they do not directly involve the Board of Regents.

He said since Vilsack’s funding recommendations were less than the Board of Regents’, members will be monitoring the Legislature during this year’s session to see what its final funding decision will be.

McCarroll said the new fee approval at the three universities also will be fairly non-controversial since they are very specialized and were brought before the board during its December meeting.

“This is not a general fee that affects students broadly,” McCarroll said. “They have to do with specific items.”

Iowa State is asking for three new fee increases dealing specifically with the course delivery for electrical engineering, orientation and matriculation services and sponsored international students.

McCarroll said the board also will be looking at the approval of money for the construction of the new Ames/ISU Ice Arena and the sale of dormitory revenue bonds for the ISU Department of Residence’s Hawthorn Court project.
