An ISU student died early Thursday morning after sustaining injuries in a car crash.

James Woodman, 23, senior in management information systems, died Thursday at about 8:15 a.m., said a spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The accident occurred near the intersection of South Dakota Avenue and Mortensen Parkway at about 1 a.m., said Ames police. Woodman was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, where he was pronounced dead several hours later.

The name of the other driver involved in the accident had not yet been released.

Pete Englin, associate dean of students, said Woodman’s family in Bellevue, Neb., was notified after the accident.

“It’s heart-wrenching,” Englin said. “It’s a terrible loss, and we feel for his family and his friends here at Iowa State.”
