Campustown businesses prepare for departure of students

Whether Campustown businesses extend their hours for the holidays or cut back due to the drop-off of customers, merchants are prepared for the changes that occur after finals.

Steve Stogdill, manager of Subway, 113 Welch Ave., said the week right after finals is the worst for business.

“There is no one around that week,” he said.

He said Subway employees saw a significant drop off over Thanksgiving break, which has helped them in their decision to close a couple of hours early every day during Christmas break.

“We just generally have less customers,” Stogdill said.

Santa Fe Espresso, 116 Welch Ave., is another business that is planning on closing up shop a little early.

“We always cut back on hours over Christmas break,” said Stan Rivera, manager and co-owner of Santa Fe Espresso.

He said store officials are planning on locking up about two hours early every day.

“I think that every Campustown business notices a little drop-off in customers,” Rivera said.

However, there are some businesses that are not changing their hours during break.

John Crawford, general manager of Copyworks, 105 Welch Ave., said Copyworks is planning on staying open 24 hours a day during break, with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

“We do see a drop-off in students, and I would be lying if I said that it didn’t affect business,” Crawford said.

Cy’s Roost, 121 Welch Ave., and Welch Ave. Station, 207 Welch Ave., are both keeping regular hours over break with the exception of Christmas Day.

Mike Adams, manager of Welch Ave. Station, said business actually picks up during the week over break.

“We have a very regular crowd that still comes in over break,” he said.

However, Adams said business does drop a little bit on the weekends.

“Our schedule doesn’t really change,” he said.

Mark Lee, store manager of American Computer Institute, 114 Welch Ave., said the store sees less student traffic, but it doesn’t affect business.

“Business doesn’t slack really during break,” he said.

Some Campustown businesses even have extended holiday hours over break to try to appeal to holiday shoppers.

Grandma’s Jewelry Box, 2530 Lincoln Way, stays open about seven extra hours a week during the holidays.

However, Chandra Linley, sales associate at Grandma’s Jewelry Box, said there is a drop-off of students after finals week.

“We do a lot of business with students during finals week because many have more money after selling books back,” she said.
