Hastings brings more variety to Ames

Where can you find a video to rent, a book to read, a CD to listen to and a free cup of coffee all under the same roof?

Hastings is the newest multimedia entertainment store located at 620 Lincoln Way, where the old Target used to be.

The store opened Oct. 26 and has been successful so far, according to store manager Mike Wagner. The grand opening will be in mid-November with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In the first part of December, Kristie Allen, the actress who plays Billie on “Days of Our Lives” and the well-endowed elevator woman in “Liar, Liar,” will be coming to Hastings to help celebrate the new store.

“We just like to bring in stars sometimes to generate excitement,” Wagner said.

Hastings is a chain store based in Amarillo, Texas, with 144 stores gathered around the United States and has been around since 1968. The chain targets populations with 20,000 to 50,000 people and also college towns.

“We look at the population and then go to the town,” Wagner said. “We also look at the competition, which there’s not a lot of in Ames, except for video stores.”

Because Hastings is considered a discount store, customers can often receive more for their money. Hardback and paperback bestsellers are 30 percent off and every book is already discounted 10 percent off of the cover price. The music selection is also discounted 10 percent with weekly sales.

“Anyone can bring in their used CDs and Hastings will pay them cash for what they’re worth, or you can chose in-store credit and get 30 percent more for your dollar,” Wagner boasted. “You can also bring in five used and get one free CD.”

A coffee station, with flavors such as Irish Creme and Mocha Java Fudge, is free to all customers and browsers.

Lounge areas are spaced throughout the store and the Kid’s Corner has story time on Saturdays at 11 a.m. with free refreshments. Also, parents can rent two children’s videos for free, excluding the popular flicks.

Music lovers can even listen to a variety of new CDs before deciding to buy any.

For video game fans, Hastings has a game area that allows customers to play Playstation, Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo 64. Computer software and accessories are also available and video rentals range from 49 cents to $2.99 for recent releases.

“You can find all your entertainment needs in one store,” Wagner said. “We carry all new and old stuff. We have the friendliest and best service in town. Where else in town can you buy a video and a book?”
