Invading radio airwaves in central Iowa and all across the world, Lou Bega’s hit song “Mambo No. 5” has gotten a lot of attention lately for its unique sound.

Mixing elements of swing with a Latin beat, the fast-paced song makes you want to get up and dance.

According to Ace U-Bomb, music coordinator for KCCQ, the station gets 20 to 30 requests for “Mambo No. 5” every day. The song became popular within the first couple of days of playing it.

“A lot of people like it because it mentions their name,” Ace U-Bomb said. Monica, Erica, Rita, Tina and an entire list of names are included in the song’s lyrics.

The song has been tearing up the charts both in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

“Mambo No. 5” now ranks at No. 11 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” singles chart and is recognized as the “Greatest Gainer” in radio airplay.

It has been No. 1 for two weeks in the U.K., one of 14 countries in which it has topped the singles chart. The song also reached the top of Music and Media’s “Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.”

The man behind the music, Lou Bega, was born David Loubega in Monaco Bauiera. Raised in Germany by his Ugandan father and Italian/Brazilian mother, Bega grew up with an older brother and younger sister. Bega’s success has come at the early age of 23.

“Mambo No. 5” has also experienced heavy airplay in local night clubs.

At Denny Arthur’s in Des Moines, the song is constantly played, said K Double Doggy Dog “The Pupster,” who works at the club.

“It has a real catchy beat,” he said, “and that’s why it is played so frequently at Denny Arthur’s.”

However, he said, the “Mambo No. 5” dance hasn’t caught on yet with central Iowans.

Morning talk show “Live With Regis and Kathie Lee” aired a segment on the “Mambo No. 5” dance.

According to the show, the dance is similar to the Macarena. Steps include putting your hands on your head, taking one step left and one step right, a step to the front and to the side and clapping your hands twice. The lyrics give the commands for dance steps so it is easy to follow along.

So if you’re an Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary or Jessica — a little bit of you makes Lou Bega your man.
