An Iowa State football player was cited for underage possession of alcohol at Hilton Coliseum at Monday evening’s “WWF Raw is War.”

Athletic Department officials said Adam Runk, 20, a defensive back for the Cyclones, was disciplined within the guidelines of their department, but he will not be suspended.

Runk, junior in management information systems, was seen holding a cup of beer by a Department of Public Safety officer at the event, said Jerry Stewart, associate director of DPS. Runk did not have the required wristband to purchase and drink alcoholic beverages.

“An officer observed a person without a wristband who was in possession of a cup of beer, and it was determined that he was under the legal age,” he said. “He was issued a citation and released.”

Stewart said since Runk received a “schedule violation,” he can either appear in court, or in lieu of that, pay a fine. With court costs and surcharges, the fine is about $145, Stewart said.

Although there were 10 DPS officers patrolling “WWF Raw is War,” Stewart said for the most part, the night was quiet and uneventful.

“We cited two or three individuals for underage possession of alcohol, and they were cited and released,” he said. “Four persons were taken into custody and charged with public intoxication.”

Tom Kroschell, director of Media Relations for the Athletic Department, said head football coach Dan McCarney “has addressed this issue with Adam, and discipline was handled internally. He is not suspended.”

“It was handled consistent with our team rules, and that’s all we’re going to say about it,” said Kroschell, who declined to comment on how McCarney or other Athletic Department officials feel about Runk’s citation.

Runk, who could not be reached for comment, saw action in eight games in 1998. He redshirted his initial collegiate season in 1997.
