A burglar struck the General Services Building sometime early Tuesday morning, taking off with about $13,000 of university-owned equipment.

Loras Jaeger, director of Iowa State’s Department of Public Safety, said DPS received a report about 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning that the building had been burglarized.

Upon investigation, it was found that computers, computer equipment and various other items had been stolen from the building.

Jaeger said the items were taken from various parts of the building.

Stolen goods included several computers, a digital camera, a personal digital assistant and a screwdriver.

There are no suspects as of yet, Jaeger said.

DPS believes the heist occurred sometime after 2 a.m. because there was staff in the building until then.

The building was locked and secured at the time the burglary occurred, but DPS has not found any signs of forced entry to the building.

Jaeger said that does not necessarily mean the burglar is someone who had access to the building.

He said there could be various ways to gain entrance to a locked university building.

“Yes, the building was locked that night, and there were no signs of forced entry, but anybody could stay in the building after it was locked, or they could jimmy a lock that was a little weak, or it’s possible that not all the doors were closed,” he said.

Jaeger characterized the burglary as a standard job.

“Those types of things are fairly common around here,” he said.

The General Services Building houses many of the non-specific departments of the university.

Among other services, the building houses postal and parcel services, Facilities Planning and Management, the university key services, the purchasing department and much of the university maintenance equipment.

Jaeger said the investigation is still ongoing, and the report is not yet closed.
