The Iowa State indoor teams looked impressive last weekend, hosting the Iowa State Open. The meet started on Friday, and the action didn’t subdue until Saturday night. The roster was bigger than the buffet line at Happy Chef, with 21 college teams being represented at the event. The ‘Clones came into the event prepared and looking to begin their climb to the top of the Big 12 ranks.
The key highlight of the day was the outstanding placing by the men’s team. The men had 12 top four finalists on the day. Quiande Moore was the man for ISU, claiming 25 percent of the finishes. Moore placed second in the high jump (2.11 meters) and also had fourth place finishes in both the long jump (7.3 meters), and the triple jump (14.66 meters). Cyclone teammate Joey Brunkhorst also stepped it up, tying Moore in the high jump.
The women’s team also reaped many benefits on the day, having 13 top-four placings. The team brought home gold in four events. The shot put, long jump, 60-meter high hurdles and the distance medley all produced first-place finishes.
Lisa Griebel set the standard in shot put with a toss of 15.28 meters. The long jump par was leveled by Barbara Szlendakova, (6.10 meters) who was followed up by teammate Trina Radske (6.06 meters). Another close call between mates had speedsters Victoria Gunnarson and Ola Adetiba vying for first in the 200-meter dash. Gunnarson edged out Adetiba by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 24.60 seconds. The distance medley team also notched a top billing with a time of 11:56.08.
Katarina Svensson had an outstanding performance in the 600-meter dash, with a time of 1:25.80. Gunnarson had another showdown in the 60-meter dash, placing second with Cyclone Christina Peterson right behind her. Szlendakova also won bronze in the 400-meter dash. Cyclones Leah Elbert and Alienor Gilchrist also ended the day with second place finishes. Elbert leapt 1.72 meters. in the high jump, while Gilchrist ran the mile in 4:55.30.
Jamie Beyer added to the men’s cause with two placings. Beyer placed second in the shot put (17.71 meters) and if that wasn’t enough, he brought home another silver in the weight throw (19.38 meters). Zech Shiebout placed third in the men’s shot put (16.15 meters).
Another highlight was the trifecta of Adrian Dunbar, Justin Hyde and Chris Wycoff, placing second, third and fourth in the 60-meter high hurdles with times of 8.02 seconds, 8.13 seconds and 8.15 seconds. Quinn Harris also had a good day placing second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.69 seconds.
