A late first-half run by Iowa State allowed the No. 20 Cyclones to take control and beat West Virginia 93-68 Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The game opened with free-flowing basketball and a back-and-forth pattern, with both teams trading leads. Iowa State was up 15-11 at the under-12 timeout in the first half.

West Virginia took an 18-17 lead with 10:29 to play, but in the rest of the first half the Mountaineers were outscored 28-10 by Iowa State. Lindell Wigginton led the Cyclones in the first half with 13 points on 3-for-6 shooting.

Despite a sloppy start to the second half from both teams, the Cyclones were able to keep the Mountineers at a distance by getting to the free throw line and making things difficult on the offensive end for West Virginia.

West Virginia kept itself in the game with its pressing defense, but Wigginton kept the Cyclones scoring. Wigginton had a season-high in points, tallying 27 on 7-for-12 shooting.

The game got bogged down by a flurry of foul calls as the second half wound down, with a total of 44 fouls called in the game.

In the end, those calls only postponed the celebrations for Iowa State, as West Virginia’s down year continued.

Up next for the Cyclones is a home game against Texas on Saturday a 1p.m.
