AE gives taste of Cyclone spirit

Anderson Erickson will be debuting three new ice cream flavors inspired by the three state universities in Des Moines tomorrow.

For over a year, Anderson Erickson, 2420 East University in Des Moines, has been working on developing a special ice cream flavor for Iowa State, one for the University of Iowa and one for the University of Northern Iowa.

AE will be giving away free samples of its concoctions from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m at Nollen Plaza. The company encourages everyone to attend and show off their school spirit.

“It’s just to celebrate Iowa schools and get support behind the schools,” said Jeanette Dove-Deerr, AE marketing specialist.

She said David Bush, AE frozen marketing manager, has worked with the three schools over the past year-and-a-half to develop flavors, and each university submitted designs for the artwork on the cartons.

“It’s been a work in progress,” Dove-Deerr said.

The flavors are Cyclone Tailgate Sundae, Hawkeye Hokey Pokey Sundae and Panther Tracks.

According to the AE Web site, www.aedairy.com, Cyclone Tailgate Sundae consists of “rich premium vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate-coated Corn Chex, peanuts and pretzels, all swirled with a caramel ribbon.”

The ice cream created for U of I, Hawkeye Hokey Pokey Sundae, is “rich premium vanilla ice cream mixed with caramel-filled chocolate footballs and chocolate-coated toffee, all swirled with a caramel ribbon.”

Finally, UNI’s Panther Tracks is “rich premium vanilla ice cream mixed with peanut butter-filled truffles and a fudge swirl.”

“We will have a sampling of all three flavors,” Dove-Deerr said.

Dove-Deerr said AE is a gold sponsor of the Iowa Games, so they were able to make the celebration coincide with the lighting of the Iowa Games torch, which begins at noon.

“It’s a fun celebration of Iowa,” she said.

She said some ISU officials will be attending the Ice Cream Bowl, as well as officials from other schools.

Each school is also sending cheerleaders and mascots to perform.

“We’re inviting everybody and encouraging them to come down and have a good time on Friday,” Dove-Deerr said.

In case of rain, the Ice Cream Bowl will be held at Capital Square.
