Students cast their votes for new leaders

Once again, students in Iowa State residence halls are being called on to cast their votes, this time to elect their leaders for next year.

On Tuesday, Richardson Court Association, Union Drive Association and the Inter-Residence Hall Association will hold their annual elections. Towers Residence Association held its election last Tuesday.

Eric Anderson and Angie Genkinger are next year’s newly-elected president and vice president for TRA. Both served on the TRA executive board this year.

Michael Robert, current UDA president, said UDA has two candidates running for president: Scott Meyers, junior in computer engineering, and Mike Pogge, sophomore in political science.

UDA is the only association in which candidates for president and vice president do not run as a slate. Robert said there is only one candidate for the position of vice president.

UDA has also changed its bylaws from past years. Robert said all positions are now elected, rather than a balance of appointed and elected positions. He added that he expects election turnout “to be better than last year.”

Both RCA and IRHA have slates running unopposed for president and vice president.

In IRHA, all of the other positions are appointed.

Pending a vote Thursday nigh,t the number of positions may change from previous years, said Jay McLaren, IRHA president. McLaren said he does not anticipate a high voter turnout because there is only one slate running.

RCA has also recently changed its bylaws and eliminated some positions. The four positions of president, vice president, treasurer and secretary are elected, and the remaining positions are appointed. The secretary position was recently changed to include promotional duties, said Renee Fosselman, RCA president.

Fosselman said she expects a large voter turnout at the polls. When asked about the lack of slates, Fosselman said people knew the students running for president and vice president and felt they had the necessary experience to do a good job.

She also added that the future of student government cannot be measured by these races, but should be measured by the interest and motivation of everyone involved, not just by those in executive positions.

IRHA will have polling places in all three associations, including the Knapp-Storms Commons, Friley Depot, Maple-Willow-Larch and the Cornerstone Post Office.

Results of the RCA, UDA and IRHA elections will be announced Wednesday.
