The Iowa State gymnastics team easily tumbled past intrastate rival Iowa Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones scored a season-high 194.725 points for the meet, while the Hawkeyes finished with a score of 190.275.

Sophomore Kelli More scored a personal best on the balance beam with a 9.925. That score won her first place, while senior Kayo Merritt and freshman Jessy Smith tied for second by tallying scores of 9.8.

On the vault, ISU once again captured top honors, with freshman Angie Umbaugh scoring a 9.725. Sophomore Sarah Stayberg tied for second with a 9.7.

ISU had more difficulty on the uneven bars. More was the only Cyclone to place in the top three, with a 9.8 which earned her third place.

Once again, the floor exercise was where the Cyclones dominated, claiming a 1-2-3 finish. Smith scored a personal best in the event with a 9.9. Umbaugh followed in second with a 9.875 and senior Libby Bell came in third with a 9.85.

The lone Cyclone to place in the all-around competition was Smith, who came in second.

More said she felt the team did really well. She said the team’s goal is to go into a meet and hit all 24 routines solidly. More also said the team needs to improve on beam and hit all of their routines.

Smith agreed that everybody was really focused and had a good meet. However, there is still room for improvement, most notably on the beam, she said.

Coach Amy Pyle said she was relieved about the meet’s result because the team needed a good home score to boost its confidence.

Pyle was also quick to add that the team needs to improve on their beam routines. She added that she was very proud of the team and wants them to keep up the good work.

The Cyclones next host Nebraska on Tuesday night. This will be the last home meet of the season and last Hilton appearance for ISU’s six seniors.

The six ISU athletes who will be moving on include Merritt, Bell, Tawnya Cary, Shannon Herzog, Heidi Kirt and Amy Wall.
