Hunt begins for Kaliedoquiz

Quiz show participants may soon be searching for golf balls in the snow or answering wacky and not-so-wacky trivia questions when Iowa State’s radio station, 88.5 KURE, hosts Kaliedoquiz.

KURE’s annual Kaliedoquiz, which is scheduled for March 27 and 28, is a 26-hour trivia show that lasts from 3 p.m. Friday until 5 p.m. Saturday.

During this time, Kaliedoquiz’s radio disc jockeys ask trivia questions every six minutes, and sometimes teams are asked to take part in scavenger hunts.

“Kaliedoquiz has been around for approximately 35 years,” said Casey Houston, director of the 1998 Kaliedoquiz. “It is one of the biggest quiz shows in the world.”

Students as well as non-students are allowed to participate in the quiz show. According to Houston, sophomore in chemical engineering, the larger the group, the better.

The teams must find the answer as quickly as possible and call in to the radio station. The group who calls in and answers the question first gets the points. The team with the most points at the end wins.

Students pick their own teams as well as team names. Most teams, however, are composed of hall floors, fraternities and sororities.

All of the teams send members to various parts of campus with a mix of tools close.

Some participants might wait in the library by a computer while others are equipped with trivia books. Several players may remain by the phone to call the radio station with the answers to questions.

“The questions are worldwide trivia that we [the directors] make up,” Houston said. “The scavenger hunts could be around campus, Ames or the state. It’s wherever they can find the items.”

“The top three teams win a prize,” he said. “Everyone in the winning groups receives a prize.”

The number of people involved with the quiz show varies from year to year. In the 1970s or 1980s, KURE had 6,000 participants in one show, Houston said.

Those that would like to participate in Kaliedoquiz should pick up an application at the radio station’s headquarters, 1199 Friley Hall. There is an application fee from $20 to $25.

Last year’s champions are from Barker House in Lyon Hall.
