Two chapters of the Iowa State greek system are taking a step forward to help a worthy cause.

On Saturday, members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Chi Omega sorority will team up to walk in the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes.

“This event is an annual nationwide walk-a-thon held to generate funds for research grants working to find a cure for diabetes,” said Justin Wilhelm, member of Lambda Chi Alpha and sophomore in mechanical engineering.

“I think the walk will be a good time. We’ll be doing something good,” he said.

This is the first year that Lambda Chi Alpha and Chi Omega have teamed up for the walk.

Heather Patterson, Chi Omega member and sophomore in history, said the cause has generated a lot of support.

“We’re all participating as far as getting people to donate money. We’re going to ask our teachers, friends and family members to donate money for the walk to cure diabetes,” Patterson said.

She said everyone in the sorority is excited about the walk because it is for such a good cause.

Katlyn Stewart, member of Chi Omega and sophomore in advertising, said 35 members of the sorority will participate, and about 40 members from Lambda Chi Alpha will join.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the walk,” Stewart said.

Patterson said the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes is one of the top five walks in the nation.

The Des Moines walk, expected to raise about $1 million this year, is one of the top four most productive walks in the nation.

Patterson said contributions from last year’s Des Moines walk exceeded those from much larger cities, including Dallas, Minneapolis and Chicago.

“I’m looking forward to this because it’s a good way for us to show the community that we’re involved,” she said. “It will be a lot of fun.”
