Thirteen was the magic number for the men’s and women’s track teams on Friday at the ISU Holiday Classic. The teams won 13 events in the indoor season opener.

The women’s squad was led by Trina Radske and Kris Curnyn. Radske leaped to first place in the long jump with 20 feet, 5 inches and legged 7.62 to win the 60-meter dash. Curnyn won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 6 and 1/4 inches. She also took the 20-lb. weight throw with a distance of 58 feet 6 and 1/4 inches.

ISU’s Leah Elbert hovered over 5 feet 8 inches to win the high jump.

A trio of freshmen women also fostered first-place honors in their first Cyclone meet.

Barbara Szlendakova won the 300-meter dash with a time of 40.01. Oluwaseum Adetiba clocked 25.11 seconds to capture the 200-meter, and Anna Hauskins topped the 600-meter, registering 1:39.

Sydney Pounds placed second in the mile with a time of 5:07.

Even though the first-place finish was stolen from her in the final stretch, Pounds said, “I felt really strong and I was really happy with how my body was feeling.”

She said the meet will give her something to build on over the holiday break.

Personal bests were posted by Joanne Roepke and Maaike Ouwersloot in the 400-meter dash and the 3,000 meter run, respectively.

Roepke finished the loop in 57.2, her best indoor or outdoor effort ever.

“I’m excited because we did well at this meet, and I know we can do better,” Roepke said.

“Times at this meet reflect how good we are going to be come in a couple months,” she said.

Ouwersloot beat the 11-minute mark for the first time in the event. She said “Coach [Dick Lee] told me I was going to, and I did.”

Finishing in 10:56, she said part of the push behind her accomplishment was the desire to beat a woman recruited to be on the Cyclone team, who currently runs for Northern Iowa.

Cyclone Kevin Farrow captured the 5,000-meter title to open the meet for the men. He recorded 14:30 for the 3.1 mile runaround.

Randy Thompson and Jason Woods each garnered first places as well.

Woods won the 60-meter hurdles and Thompson picked up a first place in the 300-meter dash with a time of 34.05.

Thompson said the men have been working hard and practices are going great.

Although he clocked the winning time in the 300-meter, he said he wasn’t pleased with it.

However, having to sit out the last outdoor season due to injury, Thompson said, “It felt good to run.”

Thompson said he was happier with the men’s winning 4×300 meter relay. The four-man squad included Woods, Thompson, Quinn Harris and Adrian Dunbar.

For the Cyclone women, the 4×300 found success, winning the event with a team that included Sara Riemersma, Szlendakova, Roepke, and Adetiba.
