The Iowa State hockey team wiped out Wisconsin-Whitewater this weekend, notching two more wins to up the Cyclone record to 13-1.

In the 7-1 victory Friday, ISU’s Darren Anderson scored a hat trick plus one for a total of four game goals. Cyclones Jason Vega, Sean Strama and Chad Evers also netted a goal apiece in the match, played on the Warhawks’ home ice in Stoughton, Wis.

Coach Al Murdoch said the offense and defense had strong showings in the weekend series. He said the team’s offense has developed four strong lines, and the defense is “playing the body well” using zone coverage and back-checking strategies.

Saturday night, the Cyclones returned to the rink to collect their second weekend win. The final score in the second game was 7-3.

Cyclone Mike Ogbourne pocketed two goals and Friday’s scoring star, Anderson, put one on the board. Brian Wierson, Terry Conlin, Tom Grimwood and Brian Paolello added goals to the Cyclone score.

Paolello, a left wing, said ISU did not have to use power plays to win. “We beat them five-on-five, we just outpowered them,” he said.

Murdoch said he felt the team played pretty well in the series, allowing many players to pick up ice time.

He also said he was pleased with the goaltending, calling the weekend performance by Rob Howitt and Nick Makris “really sound.”

Speaking for the offense, center Nick Krueger said the team’s depth was one of the Cyclones’ advantages against the Warhawks.

Krueger and Paolello said the team played fairly well but admitted the series was not an outstanding performance.

Krueger said, “I wouldn’t say we played our best hockey, but even when you don’t, good teams come out with wins. And we did.”

ISU is preparing to battle the 24th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini next weekend. Other than the Cyclone squad, the Illini is the only team who has defeated Eastern Michigan. While the Cyclones went 2-0 up north in Wisconsin, Illinois tied Eastern Michigan Friday and earned a win Saturday.

“We’ve held the edge the last couple of years, but they seem to have regenerated their team,” Murdoch said, adding that the series will be very physical and probably the “fastest hockey of the season.”

Currently, ISU’s squad sits higher than Illinois, and everyone else, in the national rankings and that’s something the Illini will be thinking about heading into the series, Paolello.

“They’re going to play their best hockey. They’re gonna come in playing really tough. We’re looking for some good competition,” he said.
