Frances Anne Scrutton, a senior in management information systems, was found dead this past Monday in her residence, 1013 J Ave., Nevada.

The date and cause of Scrutton’s death are not yet known, although she did die of “natural causes,” according to Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Scrutton, 43, struggled with several serious medical problems her entire life.

Her mother, Joan Scrutton, said she wants her daughter remembered “as a battler, and [people that knew her] will all recognize that,” she said. “She didn’t give up.”

Scrutton said her daughter had quite a few close friends at the university, especially among the disabled.

Frances Scrutton loved attending ISU, her mother said.

She had been taking classes for years while her two daughters, Bronwyn Calsyn of Seattle, Wash., and Heather Scrutton of St. Paul, Minn., were growing up.

Her daughter came over to her mother’s house quite often to study, Joan Scrutton said.

Joan Scrutton said her daughter received her bachelor’s degree in 1995, but was still taking classes to get a good job.

“She just wanted to do something in the computer-related field,” Joan Scrutton said.

“I don’t think she thought it wise for her to make too many [plans],” she said.

Frances Scrutton was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the National Honor Society, although she was not able to be very active.

She also worked for the Iowa State Daily, and Joan Scrutton said writing was her daughter’s forte.

She was also good at cross-stitching and was involved with the Society for Creative Anachronisms. Joan Scrutton said her daughter went to the society’s camps every year until last year, when she was no longer able to go for health reasons. “She had a really good time there,” she said.

Joan Scrutton said people who knew her daughter are “all pretty broken up about it.”

She said no one was expecting Frances to die now. “You hope things will work out,” Joan Scrutton said.

Frances Scrutton is survived by her parents, Ralph and Joan; her two daughters; her sister, Heather Rorrison, of Toronto, Canada; her brother, Ian Scrutton, of Toronto; and her granddaughter, Meridith Calsyn.

Frances Scrutton’s body was cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel.
