Sleep-out for homelessness

While many Iowa State students are worried about mid-terms this week, the Kappa Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will be homeless for 24 hours.

Starting Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 6 a.m., Phi Beta Sigma will attempt to raise awareness about the homeless problem that exists in Ames and other communities by camping out south of the Campanile.

During the 24-hour camp-out, Phi Beta Sigma will collect donations, canned food and clothing for homeless shelters in Ames.

Richard Freeman, adviser of Phi Beta Sigma, said this is not about sitting outside all night.

“This is about helping people,” he said.

Kevin Miles, graduate adviser of Phi Beta Sigma, said the idea to help the homeless came about in a meeting.

He said they were discussing plans to do a service project for the Ames community.

Miles said it is easy for people to forget there are homeless people in Ames because they are not as visible as the homeless problems in bigger cities.

He said students sometimes take money for granted, forgetting that there are a lot of homeless people in Ames.

Brian Butler, member of Phi Beta Sigma, said most of their members come from big cities where they saw homelessness up close.

“We’re trying to make people aware that it is a nationwide problem,” he said.

Butler said most college students do not realize some people go without a roof over their heads or a bed to sleep in at night.

All members of Phi Beta Sigma at ISU will participate in the camp-out.
