World famous singer and humanitarian Simon Estes will sing the national anthem at the Iowa State/University of Iowa football game Saturday.

Estes, who was born in Centerville, Iowa, sent word through a friend who set up his Iowa Tour to contact ISU’s marching band and ask them if he could sing with the band, said Marty Province, ISU’s marching band director.

Province said the band is very excited about Estes’ visit and looks forward to accompanying him.

However, he said, there are some problems with the sound system at Jack Trice Stadium which may make it difficult for Estes to sing in sync with the band.

“The problem is that there is a delay on the P.A. system,” Province said. “[Estes] will have to sing a second and a half in front of the band.”

Province said the band will practice with Estes at the stadium Saturday morning.

“With someone with his stature, I think the practice will be right the first time,” he said. “I think it will be a one-time run through.”

ISU marching band member Juli Hisel, an undeclared sophomore, said she is excited about Estes playing with the band.

“We’re honored that he called us and asked to sing at the game,” she said. “We didn’t even ask him to come.”

Estes has performed at many special events including the Statue of Liberty’s centennial celebration and President Clinton’s inaugural festivities.

He is known for his bass-baritone voice and achievements in operatic music, philanthropy and generosity to disadvantaged children.

Estes has studied music at the University of Iowa and Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

In 1996, Gov. Terry E. Branstad honored Estes with the Iowa Award, the state’s highest citizenship award.

He was also the recipient of an honorary ISU degree.
