Hiking in the prairie and learning some local lore

Another evening of wandering through nature and local history is being planned by the Story County Trails Advisory Committee and Story County Conservation.

They will hold “Story Telling on the Praeri Rail Trail” on Saturday, Sept. 13, starting at 7:30 p.m.

JoNann Twedt, an area resident, will tell stories about the trails, plants and tales of the prairie pioneers during a hike along Praeri Rail Trail.

Carol Williams, Skunk River unit ranger, will lead the hike. “I’ll be there to make sure we won’t get lost,” she said. Twedt will provide the entertainment, she said.

Williams described Twedt as an interesting person who is “sort of a local historian.”

She said Twedt helped organize the train of covered wagons for the bicentennial celebration a few years ago.

She also said Twedt is constructing a wigwam-type structure in her yard.

Williams said the journey will begin with a mile and a half-hike. Afterward, the group will find a place to sit and listen to “local lore” before returning to the starting point.

“Most of them will be true stories and a few of them may not be,” she said.

Participants are asked to dress for the weather, and Williams said they may also want to bring blankets and bug spray.

The group will meet at the northwest corner of the city park at the Roland Trailhead at Park and Maple Streets in Roland.

Though the event is free of charge, preregistration is requested. For more information, contact the Story County Conservation Center at (515) 232-2516 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Williams said they host hiking events about once a month from May through September, as well as a special Halloween hike on Oct. 25.
