Tango salon series begins tonight

No partner? No experience? No problem.

Valerie Williams of Co’Motion Dance Theater will be leading a series of Argentine tango salons in Ames at the Starlight Village, 2601 E. 13th St., beginning today.

The three-hour-long salons are open to anyone with interest. No partners or experience are needed.

The tango salon is set up different than a tango class because students will both learn steps and dance in the same night.

Beginners can learn basic steps at from 7-8 p.m. during the first part of the salon.

Students will polish variations and techniques while dancing until 10 p.m.

“The Argentine Tango is a delightful social dance and focuses on moving with the music and with your partner,” Williams said.

“It is different from modern American dances in that the modern dances are ‘dumbed down’ while the Argentine Tango concentrates on turning and grapevine steps.”

Dates for the upcoming sessions are tonight, Sept. 4 and Oct. 9, costing $5 per salon.

“We will be changing partners frequently — this is a great way to socialize,” Williams said. “These salons are for anyone who wants to learn to dance. If you can walk, you can try the tango. It’s that easy.”
