ISU gymnasts stick it to Mizzou

The Iowa State gymnastics team headed to Columbia, Mo., on Wednesday for a dual meet with the Tigers, and came away with a 193.40-191.075 win over their Big 12 Conference rivals.

The Cyclones’ performance was sparked by Freshman Kelli More.

More turned in another record performance, equalling her mark of 9.875 that she earned against the University of Iowa on the uneven bars.

Sophomore Michelle Hladky followed More and took second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.775. Junior Amy Wall finished third with a score of 9.70.

More also grabbed a first-place finish on the balance beam with a score of 9.875.

Second place on the beam went to Cyclone senior Kim Mazza with a score of 9.70. ISU junior Kayo Merrit grabbed third with a score of 9.625.

The Cyclones finished strong on the vault with juniors Heidi Kirt and Wall sharing first place with scores of 9.775.

ISU stayed strong on the vault as Mazza came in second with a score of 9.725, while freshman Kelly Cherwein took third.

Mazza also won first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825.

Kirt came in second with a score of 9.775, while junior Shannon Herzog scored a 9.725 to grab third place on the mat.

Mazza and More posted the highest all-around scores of the competition.

Mazza had a 38.925. More had a 38.40.

The Cyclones compete again tonight at Florida.

They are then in action next Friday night when they travel to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers.
