Cyclones split with Aggies

The Iowa State softball team split a weekend series with Texas A & M by scores of 4-2, and 5-4 in College Station, Texas on Saturday.

The Cyclones scored too little too late in the 4-2 loss to the Aggies.

A & M scored a run in the second and three more runs in the third inning against he Cyclones.

Iowa State didn’t answer until the fifth inning when first baseman Erin Woods singled down the right field line. Woods then stole second and advanced to third on a single by second baseman Robyn Riedler. After Riedler advanced to second base on a past ball, shortstop Jessica Polo grounded out to second base, scoring Woods.

The Cyclones’ second run came in the sixth inning when catcher Brenna Miller singled to right field and then advanced to second on third baseman Raven Coberg’s groundout. ISU right fielder Mindy Penrod then reached on an error by Aggie Jamie Smith. Miller then advanced to third base and scored on an error by Texas A & M center fielder Amy Schmaltz.

For the Cyclones, starting pitcher Debbie Nease took the loss on the mound, allowing six hits and four earned runs.

ISU came from four runs behind in the second game to grab the 5-4 victory.

Texas A&M scored four runs in the fifth inning to take what appeared to be a commanding 4-0 lead.

But Iowa State would answer, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to snatch the victory.

In the sixth, Coberg singled to left field but was replaced by pinch runner Renae Hunting. Nease singled to left field, advancing Hunting to second base. Penrod then grabbed an RBI with a single that drove in Hunting. Center fielder Missy Danilson followed by driving in Nease on a single to center field. Penrod would later score in a past ball, and pinch hitter Jamie Kahler drove in Danilson on a single to center. The final run of the inning came when Woods reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a throwing error and later reached home.
