All-American Schindler shines at championship

The Iowa State swim team, in the form of two swimmers, participated in the NCAA Championship meet. The meet was held at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota last weekend. Cyclone swimmers Joakim Dahl and Jay Schindler finished 35th out of a field of 42 teams with an 11 point total.

Schindler became only the third Cyclone to receive All-American honors for three consecutive years. He joins the ranks of Roger Watts ,who was a nine-time All-American from 1947-1950, and Jim McKevitt, who was a four-time All-American from 1954-56.

Schindler scored his highest finish at an NCAA tournament with an eighth place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of :54.71. He placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 1996 and 13th in the 200 medley in 1995.

Dahl finished 20th in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly with a time of :48.29. His time was only four places away from a trip to the finals.

Dahl also finished 28th in the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley. His time of 1:50.01 was a season best time.

The NCAA championship was won by the Auburn Tigers. The Tigers managed to score 496.5 points to take home the championship.
