Cyclones take down the Bears

The Cyclones extended their winning streak to five with a 61-52 win over Baylor last night. Iowa State Head Coach Tim Floyd did not want to hold the game in his memory.

“When we get into April this is one of those games that we don’t want to remember,” Floyd said.

After two minutes of scoreless play, Iowa State forward Kenny Pratt got the hot hand and scored the Cyclone’s first six points of the game.

With only five minutes gone in the game Cyclone guard Dedric Willoughby made the score 8-5. Baylor quickly scored six unanswered points to take a 11-8 lead. Pratt made the score 9-11 when he hit one of two free throw attempts. The Cyclones reclaimed the lead when Pratt hit another free throw and made it a 12-11 ball game.

With 4: 35 left and his team down 16-12, ISU center Kelvin Cato scored his first two points of the game on a thunderous two-handed dunk that ignited the Hilton crowd. The Cyclones jumped back ahead when forward Stevie Johnson was fouled while making a layup, and after he hit the ensuing foul shot, the score was 17-16.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Willoughby gave ISU a 25-16 lead as they entered the locker room at halftime.

The second half began as slowly as the first until Cato again awakened the Cyclone fans with a two- handed tip dunk that made the score 28-16. After a defensive stand, Willoughby fired a three-pointer that gave ISU a 31-16 lead.

Baylor climbed back to within six with 14:10 left, but the Cyclones answered eight straight points to make the score 41-27.

With 2:09 left in the game, Baylor pulled within four points.

The Cyclones answered when Cato hit two free throws to make the score 55-49. “I’m not shooting that well from the free throw line this year, but I’m practicing as hard as I can,” Cato said. “There just not falling.”

With 21 seconds left ISU point guard Jacy Holloway hit two free throws that made the score 60-52.

At the 13-second mark Cato hit a free throw that made the score 61-52, where it ended. Cato finished the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also recorded four blocks in the game.

Ten of Cato’s rebounds came in the second half. And his scoring was down from the past few games. “I couldn’t hit anything today,” Cato said.

Cyclone forward Shawn Bankhead, who is usually the defensive stopper for ISU, saw limited time due to a back injury. He collected six points and four rebounds in just 23 minutes of play.

At one point earlier in the week it was uncertain whether Bankhead would play. “It was a little tight,” Bankhead said.
