Women win in Iowa City

After a fifth-place finish at the Minnesota Invitational November 22-24, the Iowa State swimming team bounced back to finish first place at the Iowa Invitational held December 7 at the Field House Pool in Iowa City.

For ISU, Christa Graper and Jami Jager led the Cyclone swimmers with first place finishes in three events.

Graper won the 200-meter freestyle with an impressive time of 1:57.68 and the 100-meter freestyle in :54.53. Jager also took the 100-meter butterfly in :59.89.

Katie Oien, Michelle Sexton, Jager and Graper also won the 200-meter medley by turning in a time of 1:53.38.

Sexton also finished in second place in the 200-meter breast stroke and the senior 100-meter breast stroke. Sexton’s winning time in the 200-meter relay was 2:33.89, while posting a 1:12.04 in the 100-meter relay.

Other top finishers for Iowa State included Cara Chumley, who finished second in the Women’s senior 200-meter fly by turning in a time of 2:17.57.

The senior 400-meters also proved to be a hot spot for the Cyclones, collecting third, fourth and fifth place in the event.

Brooke Larson captured the third-place honors with a time of 4:48.73, Cara Chumley finished in fourth place with a 4:51.12 and Kelly Yates finished with a time of 4:53.49 to grab fifth-place honors.

The Cyclones, who got their first win of the season at Iowa, are looking to build on to their most recent Hawkeye Invitational victory.

ISU, now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference, will travel to Iowa City again on December 14 to face the Hawks in a dual meet.
