Cyclones win sloppy one in Hilton, 91-84

Iowa State sophomore forward Klay Edwards led the way with 24 points and 15 rebounds as Iowa State opened its season Wednesday night with a 91-84 exhibition win over World Basketball Opportunities.

Despite the victory, a lackluster performance on the part of the Cyclone offense breaking the press of World Opportunities left ISU Head Basketball Coach Tim Floyd displeased with his team’s performance.

“We looked like we never seen a press before. It’s probably a safe assumption for one of the guys out on the floor that we haven’t. Believe it or not, we’ve been working on it since the first day of practice. Our turnovers were really glaring,” Floyd said. “We didn’t have many opportunities to get into our offense because of turnovers. I was very disappointed in our ability to get into offense. It’s amazing that we can score 91 points and still have 28 turnovers in a game. Overall it was not a good performance.”

Floyd, who is known for his defensive style of basketball, was also concerned with his team’s defensive effort, which gave up an unusually high total of 84 points.

“I was very disappointed in our halfcourt defense. We didn’t guard the dribble at all, and as a result they got the ball into the lane area and kicked it and dished for easy baskets all night long,” Floyd said.

But Edwards and Cyclone senior point guard Jacy Holloway received praise on their efforts from Floyd. Holloway finished the game with 18 points including four three-point baskets.

“I thought Klay Edwards was outstanding. He really, really played well. We felt like he had made progress, and he certainly has, from this time a year ago. The weight room has helped him. Klay was the bright spot and we certainly need that with Kenny Pratt’s suspension,” Floyd said. “I would say that another positive would be Jacy Holloway looking at the basket. That was encouraging.”

Floyd also announced in the post game press conference that ISU sophomore center Tyler Peterson has quit the Cyclone basketball team in order to transfer to another school in search of playing time. Peterson averaged 4.7 minutes, 1.5 points and .8 rebounds per game last season.

“He let us know this weekend that he has made a decision to transfer. He doesn’t know which school he’s going to at this point. It was a playing time concern. I think he was disappointed that he only played nine minutes in the shootout. I wish him well,” Floyd said.

“He was guy who contributed everyday in practice and it’s something that I understand from his end. The minutes just weren’t there and I think he saw himself behind Kelvin Cato, Tony Rampton, Klay Edwards and possibly even Paul Shirley.”

Iowa State will take on ADELAIDE 36ers Basketball Club of Australia on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Cyclone senior forward Shawn Bankhead and senior guard Dedric Willoughby will be eligible for play while ISU senior center Kelvin Cato will still have to miss two more games.
