Clinton, Harkin win big

NEVADA — And the Story County winners are …

* Democratic incumbent Cecelia Burnett defeated Republican candidate Richard Woods in the state House of Representatives 61st district with 7,186 votes. Woods had 4,048 votes. Charles Connolly, Reform Party candidate, received 228 votes.

* In the 62nd Iowa House district, Democratic incumbent Bill Bernau garnered 5,922 votes to defeat Republican challenger Glenda Bradshaw, who received 4,681 votes. Jim Hennager, Reform Party candidate, received 273 votes.

* Teresa Garman, Republican, won reelection in the 63rd Iowa House district with 6,707 votes. There were 108 write-in votes for various candidates.

* Democratic Sheriff Paul Fitz-gerald, with 18,651 votes, defeated Republican Deputy Sheriff Gerry Bearden, with 12,458 votes.

* Democrat Judy Emmons was reelected to county auditor with 17,567 votes. Republican candidate John Anderson received 12,585 votes.

* The County Board of Supervisors race was won by Democrat Jack Whitmer with 15,946 votes. Republican candidate David Coe had 14,100 votes.

* In 32nd State Senate district, Republican challenger Larry McKibben defeated Democratic incumbent Randy Giannetto with 58 percent of the vote counted. In Story County alone, McKibben pulled 4,915 votes; Giannetto received 3,717. Ronn Young of the Reform Party received 163 votes.

* President Clinton carried Story County with 52 percent of the vote. Republican challenger Bob Dole received 38 percent. Reform Party candidate Ross Perot received six percent. Green Party candidate Ralph Nader got 2 percent.

* In the race for U.S. senator, Democratic incumbent Tom Harkin won in Story County with 56 percent of the vote. Republican challenger Jim Ross Lightfoot received 43 percent.

* The margin was close in the U.S. House of Representatives third Iowa district, but Democratic candidate Leonard Boswell squeaked by with 50.5 percent of the Story County vote. Republican candidate Mike Mahaffey received 47 percent. Boswell was narrowly elected to replace Lightfoot.

* Story County favored passing a state constitutional amendment to put all hunting revenues back into the environment.

There were 32,663 total ballots cast in Story County for all races.
