Making love outside on a cold night

Public Relations Student Society of America members proved it’s never to cold to make love on the sidewalk.

PRSSA members braved near-freezing temperatures and a biting wind to “make love on the sidewalk for the first time” outside People’s Bar and Grill Wednesday night. They asked passers-by to place their coins on the word L-O-V-E etched on the cement.

PRSSA President Joanne Roepke said this is the first time the club has tried the fund-raiser. The club hopes to raise money for the PRSSA National Conference in Saint Louis Nov. 9-12. PRSSA is a pre-professional club with clients for practical experience.

“We thought that since it was mug night at People’s, we might get a good crowd,” Roepke said. “We got the idea from some guys who were doing it at the Iowa State versus Iowa football game. They were doing it just for fun. We saw them and said we want to do this.”

So they imported the idea to Ames, but the cold weather spoiled much of their potential success. PRSSA member Amanda Fier said they would try again later.

“We got some weird looks and some people just kept walking, but other people stopped by and really had fun with it,” she said. “We want to do this again in the spring when it’s warmer out. We think it will be more successful then and we will also have ample time to plan for it.”

PRSSA hopes to send seven members to its National Conference.

The group has also sold journalism department sweatshirts and supervised credit card application sign-ups for fund-raising efforts.
