A Greenville man in a stolen car led Ames police on a high-speed chase before crashing into the side of the Haber Road underpass early Sunday morning.

According to police reports, Justin Ray Cloud, a 22-year-old man from Greenville, was seen by an Ames police officer at a pay phone in Brookside Park around 4 a.m. The officer confronted Cloud who then fled the scene in his car.

Cloud apparently tried to drive under the railroad underpass at Haber Road when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the side of the underpass. Cloud ran but was apprehended a short time later.

It was later determined that Cloud’s 1988 Plymouth Reliant was stolen from the residence of Carolyn Winter in northwest Ames.

Cloud will be charged with one count of eluding officers and two counts of interference with official acts. His bail was set at $5,000. Cloud will also be charged with second-degree theft, a Class D felony, in connection with the stolen vehicle.

Ames police learned from the Cherokee Police Department that Cloud was also wanted on felony drug warrants. Bail on those charges was set at $16,250.

Cloud is being held in the Story County Jail in lieu of $21,250.
