The Iowa State volleyball team went out last weekend in search of their first Big 12 win, playing Kansas and Kansas State, but came home empty handed.

“We were very disappointed with the weekend, especially with the Kansas loss,” Sarah Lewis, assistant coach of the Iowa State Volleyball Team, said.

“It was just one of those things where we couldn’t get to 15 first. We couldn’t terminate.”

The team’s record is now 4-16 overall and 0-8 in the Big 12.

“We have been sticking with our same lineup,” Lewis said. “Andrea Thul came in and did a nice job. Steph Dohrn is contributing some more. We are trying to find the right combination of players that are going to execute.”

Saturday’s match against Kansas allowed the Cyclones one win in the Jayhawk’s 3-1 victory, 15-13, 11-15, 15-11, 15-6.

“It was very disappointing. The whole season was disappointing,” said Colleen Henican, a sophomore outside hitter for ISU.

Sonya Van Helden had the team high in kills with 22, while Rachelle Van Scoyoc adding 16 kills. Colleen Henican had a team high 14 digs, along with five blocks and seven kills.

Jodi DeVries had a team high seven block assists, and added six kills. Jen Lansink tallied 55 assists, along with a service ace and 13 digs.

The Jayhawks had four players in the double digits in kills. Moira Donovan lead the team with 18 kills, Kendra Kahler and Mary Beth Albrecht each had 17, and Maggie Mohrfeld added eleven kills, while leading the team in block assists with eight.

“Sonya [Van Helden] played pretty well against Kansas. She did make some errors at times that she shouldn’t have,” Lewis said. “We just need more from her.

“The bottom line is execution. It’s done every day in practice,” Lewis said. “We have certainly had a tough time on the road.”

The Cyclones started the weekend playing at Kansas State on Friday night. The Wildcats swept ISU in a three game match, 15-8, 15-12, 15-10.

Senior outside hitter Sonya Van Helden lead the Cyclones in kills with twelve, and in digs with six. Henican added nine kills, and senior middle blocker Rachelle Van Scoyoc and freshman middle blocker Jodi DeVries had seven kills each.

Senior setter Jen Lansink had 23 assists, with sophomore Julie McGrath adding 11 assists.

Kansas State had two players with double digit kills — Abbie Brown with 16, and Kim Zschau with 15. Kate Clerk added four kills along with five blocks.

“We are just as good as those teams — that is the way we have felt about most of our opponents this year,” Henican said. “We expected to win this weekend — they were two tough losses.

“[Jen Lansink] has come back pretty strong and was able to get her position back,” Henican added. “Andrea Thul got to play the outside. She is a very good passer and is very good at defense. Jodi [DeVries] really commanded the net well. It is good to see our younger players doing that — they are the future of the program.

“We take it one game at a time,” Henican said.

The team travels to battle Missouri this Wednesday, but will be back at the Hilton for a match against Oklahoma this Friday night at 7:30.
