Sex information available to the blind

Safe sex kits are now available for the blind.

The kits, which contain plastic coated braille cards and audio cassettes, have information on sexually transmitted disease prevention and birth control methods.

The safe sex kits also include attached devices to some of the cards, such as birth-control control pills, to help in the learning experience.

Two types of kits are available, one for teens and one for preteens. Both kits are available at three locations in Iowa— the Iowa Braille and Sightsaving School Library in Vinton, the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City and the library of the Department for the Blind in Des Moines.

Theresa McDonald, a nurse practitioner with the Emma Goldman Clinic for Women said, “We have given out around 200 [kits] over the last two years. We are in the process of preparing another 100.”

McDonald added that the braille books and audio cassettes, which are available for check-out or for use at the library, have received praise from teachers.

“We get positive feedback. Teachers are not experts in everything and this helps them teach students,” McDonald said.
