An Iowa State student was killed June 11 after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a car.

Kenneth R. Bollinger, a 19-year-old freshman, was traveling south on Iowa Highway 15 through his hometown of Fenton, Iowa. Around 5:10 p.m. his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle driven by Dawn M. Hansen, 18, of rural Burt, said Kossuth County Sheriff Kevin Van Otterloo.

Bollinger was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kossuth County coroner. Hansen and her passenger received no injuries.

Bollinger was a pre-mechanical engineering major and is survived by his parents, Randy and Lanelda Bollinger of Fenton, his sister, Kari, 20, and his brother, Kurtis, 13.

Kari is a nursing student at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines and is living in Fenton for the summer. “He just loved life and he had everything he needed here, and the only thing left was heaven, really,” she said.

She said Kenneth enjoyed “motorcycles, cars — working with his hands, you know — music, and of course, friends.”

He looked forward to becoming an engineer and found life at ISU enjoyable, his sister said. “Well, he really didn’t like the school part that much, but he liked his friends,” Kari said, “but that’s usual.”

The accident was investigated by the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department and the Fort Dodge branch of the Iowa State Patrol. Fenton’s ambulance and fire departments assisted at the scene.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, no charges against Hansen have been filed pending an investigation.
