Cyclones get revenge against Hawkeyes

The Iowa State baseball team was looking for revenge against Iowa, for a 6-5 loss last Thursday to the Hawkeyes, and they got it.

The Cyclones’ offense came alive to give the team a 12-3 win over Iowa on Tuesday.

Iowa State pitcher Jeff Sebring started the game for the Cyclones in the first inning and held the Hawkeyes at bay with no runs.

Iowa State left fielder Mike Bahun led off the first inning by getting hit by a pitch. Bahun later scored on a single by third baseman Sammy Cox. The Cyclones made the score 2-0 when right fielder Scott Vance hit a sacrifice fly that drove in ISU second baseman Cory Bohannon.

There were no more runs scored until the third inning, when Bahun led off the inning with a solo homer to left field. The Cyclones then led 3-0.

A triple by Vance then scored Cox and made the score 4-0. Vance was later driven in when ISU catcher Troy Logan singled to center to give ISU a 5-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Sebring received some great help from his defense. Iowa State shortstop Ryan Harmon made a huge play when he jumped in the air to catch a line drive, and then made a throw to first for a double play.

Harmon made another great play in the fifth inning that saved a run, when he made a running grab behind second and made the throw to first for the out, while holding a runner at third. Iowa scored one run in the fifth inning, but it was unearned, and was the only run scored while Sebring was on the mound.

The Cyclones continued their offensive barrage in the fifth inning. Darrin DeReu doubled, and later scored on a two-run smash over the left field fence by Sammy Cox, and the Cyclones were up 7-1.

In the sixth inning ISU had runners at first and third when Harmon executed a sacrifice bunt to score Cyclone designated hitter Matt Faulken from third and made the score 8-1. Iowa State added two more runs on a Bohannon single later in the inning, giving the Cyclones a 10-1 lead.

Iowa State drove in two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Cox double that made the score 12-1.

Iowa scored two runs in the ninth inning on a homer to left field, and made the score 12-3, but that was the only offense that the Hawkeyes could muster against a seemingly invincible Cyclone ball club.

Iowa State head coach Lyle Smith was pleased with the performance of his baseball team.

“Jeff did a real nice job and so did the rest of the guys,” Smith said.

The team is currently trying to get a bid for the Big Eight Tournament, and need continued success in the conference to do so.

“We need all the aspects of defense, offense and pitching to come together, to get to the tournament,” Sebring said.
