The Story County Sheriff’s Office is missing $1,500 and the search is on for the cause of the discrepancy.

The state auditor began the looking at the department’s books Monday, after the Story County Sheriff, Paul Fitzgerald, requested a complete audit of his office.

Last week the state auditor informed the sheriff of a discrepancy which stems from a one-time $1,500 cash receipt.

The discrepancy was discovered during the annual county audit.

“When the item was discovered we proceeded immediately into further investigation,” said Warren Jenkins, chief deputy state auditor.

There is no timeline for resolving the discrepancy.

“It depends on what we find. We are doing additional work in the sheriff’s office, looking to see which things need to be resolved,” Jenkins said.
